Centred in the photograph is the Piazza del Duomo, originally commissioned in 1296 as a cathedral so magnificent that it will be impossible to make it either better or more beautiful with the industry and power of man. The covered bridge to the left is the Ponte Vecchio and has spanned the Arno river at narrowest point since Roman times.
